Get Past That Fear of Marketing

There is an obnoxious little gremlin hiding in the private-practice bushes. And he is disguised as a trusted advisor.

“You can’t build a full practice of self-paying clients” he taunts.

Or during an intake phone call with a prospective client, he whispers in the therapist’s ear “They really can’t afford you. You should lower your fee.”

His message is like a dull pounding over and over - “you can’t…they won’t…don’t bother.”

I have to admit I know this guy pretty well. He lived in my head for years.

But one day I realized that his message was going to squash my dreams of a full practice with clients I adore and “making a good living while making a difference.”

So I began to challenge his ideas. I got serious and asked myself these questions:

1. Were there therapists anywhere making a good living?

Of course there were. In fact, almost all the therapists in my suite were. At my local professional association meeting there were therapists who were doing quite well. There were colleagues I’d met at conferences in other parts of the country that were quite successful.

Okay, if they could do it, why couldn’t I?

Now, that annoying gremlin tried to sneak in some comments but I refused to listen. I was on a roll.

2. What was the formula of those therapists’ success?

Four had business mentors that were guiding them with sage advice. Others had studied marketing techniques. A few told me “It is about deciding what you want and then doing what it takes.”

In other words, they had self-confidence. And they were learning and taking action while I had been listening to that voice of fear.

Well, the rest is history. But I am still on a mission to remove that gremlin’s power over therapists.

That is why we have a very remarkable presenter on our Practice Building Virtual Conference faculty: Dr. Carol Look.Dr. Look will present on just this issue. She is an expert in Attracting Abundance and is author of “Attracting Abundance with EFT” (Emotional Freedom Technique)

EFT is a type of energy work that involves tapping on designated acupressure points on the face and body along with visualization and affirmations.

Dr. Look’s experience with therapists and those fearful about marketing plus her expertise with EFT will make her presentation particularly interesting. She will work with a volunteer on her call as we all follow along. Her objective will be help us move past the fears of marketing and pave the way for more abundance.

Then, after working through those limiting beliefs, it will be, as with all other successful clinicians, simply about implementing your marketing plan to earn big doing what you love.

If you want to join us, please take a peek at at our conference site by clicking here. Also if you have already signed up for the Practice Building Virtual Conference and want to be the single volunteer to work with Carol during her presentation, please send an email to us Support@Intli.com

OK first off I live in the country and am not willing to sign a 3 year contract, so I’M STUCK ON DIAL UP…

That is not negotiable… if there were 1 year satellite contracts I would be able to access faster speed internet…

Secondly I am shy, and disorganized… not a great combo for venturing out…

thirdly I do a LOT of pro bono work which keeps me occupied…

I am also gravitating to more alternative therapies… Energy Psychology…Biofeedback…Chakra clearings…

THANKS Casey for another great post. I imagine that many have had their fears and reluctances reinforced by non-payoffs. This probably kept me from getting on the internet for too long. My latter efforts HAVE been reinforced. :) Looking forward to Virtual Conference and hopefully learning some new things.

Good luck w. your marathon training.

Great points Casey. I’m a therapist with a private practice and an online business of selling e-workbooks for couples via my mental health and relationships resource website (The Toolbox at LisaKiftTherapy.com).

I’m so grateful that I took the internet marketing plunge a number of years ago – because it’s allowed me maintain a successful private practice and see the sales of my workbooks steadily increase.

The reality is, the landscape has changed completely for therapist and counselors. Unless you currently have a thriving practice based soley on referral, you can only benefit from jumping into the marketing pool. It’s ok – just do it!

Regards,
Lisa Brookes Kift, MFT
