We are expanding – The Therapists Leadership Institute

in Articles

As you may know, my mission over the last year has been expanding beyond Be A Wealthy Therapist. While I still feel very passionate about helping therapists to build their practices, I am feeling called to help even more clinicians.

So this is the official announcement of our new name and expanded mission. We will be known as

The Therapists Leadership Institute

Dedicated to enhancing the lives, careers and reputations of therapists worldwide

(Just as a side note – what do you think sounds better: Therapist Leadership Institute or Therapists (with an s) Leadership Institute? Please let me know what you think of our new name in the comment section.

I vote for Therapist without the s – too confusing grammatically otherwise, I start thinking should there be an apostrophe, is it plural, etc. Keep it simple.

Hi,
Definitely the singular. I agree it sounds more personal. “Therapist’s” that someone mentioned is incorrect – that’s singular possessive. If there’s an S it would have to be either the way it is now, or Therapists’ to show plural possession, i.e. the web site for many/all therapists. Glad you asked b/c I like the singular so much more for what it conveys! (What do you think of my website??)

Funny when I first read about your new iniative, I thought it should not have the S. Glad you asked. I agree that if you do use the S, there should be an apostrophe for possession. But it feels cleaner without.

I think (singular) sounds better…

I like the singular version.

I like Therapist Leadership Institute. When I read The Therapists Leadership Institute, my first thought was that an apostrophe was needed. I think you’d prefer to have me thinking about the concept rather than perseverating on absence or presence of apostrophes. All the best!

I agree with most of those who have commented. Leave off the “s”

Congratulations – and as we say in Spanish

Enhorabuena!

Leave off the “s”; it looks cleaner and is the more correct form since the singular is used for a class of persons.

I like Therapist Leadership Institute. It has a sense of personal responsibility and ownership, as in, “I” the therapist is a leader. This feels like a group of leaders each in their own right that is coming together to better our profession.

“Therapist” because it is an individual decision whether one decides to lead or follow, just like you most likely made an individual decision to change the name in the first place.

I think is sounds best without the s. Good luck to you!

Congratulations on your business expansion; you’ve certainly worked hard to achieve it!

Grammatically, “apostrophe s” is the correct answer, but others take liberties such that the possessive designation is left off.

It seems that TLI will not be in conflict with CAMFT as a political organization, but how do you see “Dedicated to enhancing the lives, careers and reputations of therapists worldwide” as not overlapping?

Therapist. I second the comments of Linda (above).

Reply

Jane January 19, 2009 at 9:50 am

I prefer “therapist” because when I read “Therapists Learning Institute” it implies possessive plural, which would require an apostrophe following the “s” (Therapists’).

Dot Kostriken January 19, 2009 at 9:41 am

Therapist, without the s, sounds more universal, to me. Thanks, Casey.

Karen January 19, 2009 at 9:41 am

The singular sounds and looks better, in my opinion. Adding “s” at the end takes away from the strong, crisp “t”.

Anita Rice, Psy.D. January 19, 2009 at 9:29 am

I would drop “the” from the title even though you will use it in correspondence with a “small t.” I would keep the official title short:
Therapist Leadership Institute. (TLI)

God bless you.

Therapist (without the S) is easier to say unless you want to add an apostrophe and use Therapists’ Leadership Institute which actually connotes the leadership training available is for therapists. Thanks for your good work and unsinkable optimism.

From a linguistic perspective, it is easier to pronounce THE THERAPIST LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE deleting the S.
Hope that’s helpful and good luck with it.

Lisa Herman January 19, 2009 at 9:20 am

I like the singular. It does call for an apostrophe when it’s plural.

my vote is for therapist without the S, easier to say!

Casey,

Therapist with an s is hard to say. My tongue gets stuck between therapists institute. Therapist singular is cleaner and flows in pronunciation. Joyce T.

I’m a bit of a maverick here. I’m thinking you really are providing leadership in “Therapy” (though certainly to therapists) so you might be better with

Therapy Leadership Institute

Reply

Linda January 19, 2009 at 8:15 am

I prefer Therapist. It rolls of the tongue better and avoids the question of the apostrophe after the “s” if you pluralize it. Best wishes to you and the institute!

I like it better with the s, Therapists Leadership Institute. It sounds more inclusive and that one more than one therapist can be a leader (or learn to be).

Therapist. Not plural. Good job with re-name.

OK, off to check out the new info!

Though I have not read the book yet I have heard of success stories from colleagues.

I prefer’therapist’without the “s” with the “S”its a tongue twister.

Dear Casey

Hello! I hope you are doing well and working hard

My opinion regarding if “Therapist” or “Therapists” is regarding the feeling in your body when you read each word

Therapist: Makes you feel IT IS FOR YOU!!!

Therapists: Gives you a feeling of IT´S FOR ALL OF US

But the effect of this for each person may be absolutely different since there will be cases in which a person would like to be the ONE and others for which the (S) will imply “IF OTHERS GO THERE THAT´S WHERE I HAVE TO GO”

I hope my oppinion is helpful to you

Good luck and all the best in your new projects

Esther

Therapist (without an s) both sounds and flows better when saying the phrase.

Also if you dropped the “The” it would also work…

Thanks for allowing me to have input.

Reply

Janine Reed January 19, 2009 at 12:36 am

I think it should be simply
Therapist Leadership Institute
(without the “The”)
or
If you use the plural “Therapists” I think you’d have to make it possessive: Therapists’ Leadership Institute
But I like the singular better.
