My coach Andrea loves to present me with provocative questions. She gets me thinking “beyond the dots” which is both exciting and, I have to admit, sometimes scary. She loves to ask: “What if you had all the money you wanted? What then?”
Today I spoke with a therapist who was complaining about her really bad agency job. She said “If only I would win the lottery…”
Most of us have probably said that at one time or another.
Have you seen that TV show Windfall? Where 20 people win the lottery and their lives are changed forever?
What if you had all the money you wanted? What then?
What would you do? How would your life change?
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Please share them with us here or email me at Casey@BeAWealthyTherapist.com

If I had all the money I wanted:
-I would buy out the “boarding house” operating illegally down the road and create a non-profit residential home for young mothers and their children, with an emphasis on those dealing with addiction and the effects of addiction.
-I would fix up one part of the house as a therapy clinic that would have a group room/yoga room/art studio and would allow for pet therapy and other experiential work like art and gardening as therapeutic tools.
-I would set up a low-cost clinic and staff it with student interns and graduate residents working toward licensure. I would pay the best therapists in the area give workshops on “things you don’t learn in school.”
-I would stop seeing anything but self-pay clients.
-I would gift my family and friends.
-I would buy a black Mercedes and a red pick-up truck.
-I would make sure I took at least one great trip every year.
-I would buy a home on the coast.
Personally, I would like to earn a huge income and my goal is to give away more money than I keep. My money will go to tithes and charitible organizations who are in line with my vision and passions.
Truthfully, my life would be a lot the same as it is now. I like my life. I would simply have more power when it comes to money. I would have a solid plan for a financial future versus some sort of binge/purge relationship of get it, spend it and lose it.
If I had all the money I wanted I would open a holistic counseling center to treat teens and adults who have been imprisoned by the effects of trauma in their lives. I am trained in EMDR trauma therapy. Naturally, I would employ this type of therapy, but also include group work in self esteem building, social skills, spirituality and programs to help clients appreciate their bodies which have been holding the trauma in their nervous systems for years.
With all the money I ever wanted! Some are the expected. Better living space, no bills, good car. Others like looking after Mom, doing some fun things for friends that have been with me through the not so much money times. Then a scholarship trust at my alma mater for, you guessed it, people like me! Then of course there’s the sailing in the South Pacific, the Indian Ocean etc. Professionally, I will open the REBT Institute of the South where teaching, research, and therapy will thrive for generations to come. Part of the Institute will be given to research and practice with clinical hypnosis as well. Bring in a group of practitioners, educators and researchers to advance the well being of the planets inhabitants. There’s more, but that’s personal!
The very first thing I would do is pay off all of my bills — bye bye student loans. Second thing would have to be a vacation for my family and the honeymoon we didn’t take. Pay someone else to finish the restoration of our home and my mother-in-laws. Sell our home and buy a new one that doesn’t need renovation. I’d set my mom up — probably build a duplex in case either of our mother’s need it as they age. Let my husband return to school to finish his education while I invest more in my practice. Buy a building I don’t have to pay monthly rent on — probably build it. Then I’d focus on building my practice. Somewhere in there I would start a foundation that focuses on two things helping 1st generation young women get their college education and scholarships for low-income families who want to send their to children private christian schools. Cannot leave off the pampering — travel, a place on the lake that doubles as a personal and business retreat, a boat, and jet ski.
If I had all the money I needed ( say win the lotto)I would still want to be a counselor. I have a passion for this work. However, at this time I would like to have more clients and bring in more $$.
