Efficacy of psychotherapy (at the Evolution conference)

Just attended a panel discussion on Research about the Efficacy of psychotherapy. I will be writing more about it but thought you might like a quick view. (Please press the play button and the movie will queue up after a 15 or so seconds. You will see a white screen while it queues.)

Bottom line – it isn’t about whether or not psychotherapy “works” – the research says it does. And it isn’t even about what theory or technique works best. It is about what works best with this client in this circumstance right now.

I think the relationship is so crucial in the effectiveness of psychotherapy. I am now monitoring my effectiveness as a therapist with Scott Miller and Barry Duncan’s feedback assessment tools (ORS/SRS) and have noticed a significant increase in the retention rates of my clients. It also allows me to identify clients that are at risk of dropping out. So I think it is also worth mentioning that feedback can also increase the efficacy of therapeutic work.

Sorry I missed you at the conference Casey. Hope to see you at the next one!
