Hi Casey-
I am an artist as well as a therapist. I have used my art for many years as a way to connect to and understand my own emotions and to find insight into and resolution of situations that seem baffling on the surface. In doing therapy I first attempt to become AWARE of the emotion that exists within the client, and then encourage its expression. I do not find myself CREATING emotion as much as discovering it, allowing it to be released and then supporting the person's "mental health immune system" to begin to heal. Once discovered, an emotion can be connected to thoughts, beliefs and events, which may then be processed with the "other ("rational?" Not a good word for it) side of the brain." Expressive art, guided imagery and relaxation are very powerful tools for connecting people to their own (perhaps veiled) emotions.
I am fascinated by this topic and look forward to seeing the documentary, and to thinking more deeply about what this subject means to me. It certainly struck a chord. Thank you SO MUCH for bringing it to our awareness!

HI Gregory,
I am looking forward to the documentary The Art and Science of Therapy. I find myself focused on television movie scores these days and watching how they engage me. Commercials too - watching how they create emotion in 30 seconds
Take care,
Casey

I'm looking forward to the film. As a Transactional Redecision Therapist I'm keen to find ways of inviting a client into the emotion of an old decision that needs changing. probability of permanent change goes way up when cognitions AND emotions are redecided.
Thanks Casey for the preview.
