With the many ways one can build a practice, a recent comment from a new client resonated with me.
“I want more clients and I love to write. I want to write a book but I don’t know what to do about publishing, marketing it and creating a community around it.”
Publishing is a topic that, for some of us, can trigger a PTSD flashback to graduate school or academia. For most of us, it is an unknown world, a kind of secret society that some therapists have joined while others wistfully wonder what it all entails.
Because we do know that publishing a book gives you “instant credibility.” Once your name is printed under the title of a book, more opportunities begin to open (i.e. speaking engagements, new clients, and more. )
Do you want to help more people and think in a bigger way about going public with your work?
I am pretty excited because recently I have been given a back-stage peek into this new world of publishing with my latest book, The Entrepreneurial Therapist. Publishing isn’t nearly as confusing or frustrating as I thought.
That is why I can’t wait to tell you that leading New York literary agent and book strategist, Janet Goldstein will be on our faculty at the 2010 Practice Building Conference on October 25-30, 2010. Janet has a lot of insight and experience with what works and what doesn’t for therapists wanting to write and publish to expand their impact and grow their business.
I hope you will join me at the 2010 Practice Building Conference where Janet will present:
“The New World of Publishing—How to Make Your Ideas, Books, and Content Matter and Work for Your Clients, Your Audience, Your Business, and YOU”
Whether you’re a first-time writer, an experienced author, or a creative therapist or coach with a message, it is essential to understand the all-important interconnections between editorial and marketing, content and constituency, passion and platform. Janet’s insights and concrete advice draw on years of experience in the “old” and “new” worlds of developing and launching books and ideas to the widest possible audiences.
Although you may not know it, Janet has championed many therapist-authors whose work currently lines your bookshelf. She is the publishing force behind such life-changing and bestselling books as:
* The Dance of Anger by Harriet Lerner;
* The Courage to Heal by Ellen Bass and Laura Davis;
* Wayne Dyer’s The Sacred Self;
* Janis Spring’s After the Affair;
* Charlotte Kasl’s If the Buddha Dated;
* Lama Surya Das’ Awakening the Buddha Within;
* Mark Epstein’s Going to Pieces When Without Falling Apart
and many other notable books by therapists and relationship experts.
Here are some of the topics Janet will cover at the 2010 Practice Building Conference:
* Breaking out of the “trance” of the right way to publishing. Traditional publishing is only one way to get your message out.
* The lesson of “Grape Jelly” in gaining clarity—and stickiness—with your idea, and what Janet calls your “Idea Set”
* Empower yourself with information about the 4 pathways to publish your message –ebooks and booklets; print on demand (pod); self-publishing; traditional (major and boutique)–and concrete steps to assess options and follow through.
* Why it’s important to Go Public before you think, and Publish later than you think—and how to think about each of these steps.
These are the things (and Janet is the person) I wish I knew before I started my first book. I am sure you will enjoy her presentation.
