What worked in the last decade to attract clients may not work in 2010. To attract the clients you want, refresh your internet marketing strategies (before all the other therapists do).

In the past few years, many therapists jumped on the internet with websites and online locator listings. These therapists got a leg up on their peers by being on the web early. When a prospective client searched for a therapist online, there were just a few websites to review and choose from. But now there are millions of therapist’s websites online.
The internet has created more competition for you than ever before -
especially in your local community.
If I Google “counselor Los Angeles” there are just under 10 million listings returned. Counseling in Vancouver, BC? 433,000 listings. Even if I search “Marriage Counseling” in the smallest city in the United Stated (Lost Springs, Wyoming) I am presented with 6,800 listings. How can you stand out with that much competition?
Don't be just one of the herd. With a little creativity and knowledge of your market, you can engage your web visitors in fresh ways and break from the pack. Then yours will be the phone number they dial.
Couple that with the fact that our culture is more sophisticated and has multiple ways to get help for their emotional and relationship struggles and you see the difficulties many clinicians run into with their marketing. There are books, digital downloads of workbooks and audios, you tube videos, podcasts and now even iphone apps.
It is time to take a moment – take a breath – and rethink your marketing strategies.
Do You Stand Out?
If you want to attract more clients (or sell multiple streams of therapy income) your website needs to really stand out among the other therapists in your area. How are you going to do that? You could pay for Google adwords and attempt to get your site “search engine optimized.” But guess what? So is everyone else. You must figure out a way to pull away from the pack and stand out.
There are zillions of therapists out there for clients to choose. Let's get them to see you as unique and interesting.
“Free” is the new currency. But is Free enough?
I’ve mentioned before that you need to offer something for free (a “pink spoon” or a free taste like the small taste on the pink spoon in the ice cream store) on your web site. Maybe it is an audio or “white paper” or, a really short video that engages your visitor.
But that was in 2009. The culture has changed to expect “free.” If you don’t have something for free on your site, you are likely to be ignored. But here is the big challenge. The internet is flooded with “free” Even free isn’t enough to make your website stand out among all the other therapist’s sites.
People don't want more info. They want valuable info that piques their curiosity and engages them. Create a CAPTIVATING free product ('pink spoon') on your website to capture your web visitor's interest and help them remember you.
To stay viable on the internet in 2010, you need to meet the cultural demand for free plus engage and intrigue your web visitors with information of value at the same time.
The answer is to provide CAPTIVATING free information with your web visitors. If they find something ENGAGING and CAPTIVATING, they will stay on your site longer and feel more connected. As your web visitors get to know you through your pink spoon, they can make a more informed decision as to whether to call you or the therapist around the corner. But by having a CAPTIVATING pink spoon, you will most likely look more engaging and appealing and your phone will be the one the client calls.
